Medu Udu

A 9 track africa album (42m 16s) — released January 1st 1970 on Earthwind Arts

Udu drums, sometimes called water drums, are a variety of clay pot drums developed in West Africa from clay jugs used to fetch water. For this record I made and recorded my own udu drums and also used a beautiful hybrid drum made by master potter Kai Koesling. Satisfactory udu drums are difficult to make- the deep bass sound is produced when the air in the drum is made to resonate by slapping an opening in the side of the drum. It's a kind of Helmholz resonator. The sound made by slapping the side of the drum, a higher pitched sound, is equally beautiful and a good drum will be capable of making a variety of high and low pitched sounds. Recorded udus were processed and overlaid with a variety of electronic processes.
